Mathematician, scholar of mechanics (B. Istanbul, 1 February 1894 - D. Istanbul, 29 December 1952). After completing Istanbul High School of Engineering (1914) he completed his PhD in Berlin University under the supervision of Albert Einstein (1919). He is the first Turkish mathematician to achieve the degree of PhD. Upon his return to Turkey he started to work in the school he graduated from as academic member. He was a member of the council to prepare the university reform. He undertook duties of analysis professorship and deanship in Istanbul University, Faculty of Science which was recently established. Türkiye'ye dönünce, bitirdiği okulda öğretim üyesi olarak çalışmaya başladı. Üniversite reformunu hazırlayan kurulda yer aldı. Yeni kurulan İstanbul Üniversitesi Fen Fakültesi'nde analiz profesörü ve dekan olduğu gibi Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi'nde de ders vermeye devam etti. Yüksek Mühendis Mektebi İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi'ne dönüştürülünce buradan ayrıldı ve yalnızca İstanbul Üniversitesi'nde çalış-maya devam etti. Feza Gürsey, (7 Nisan 1921 - 13 Nisan 1992) Türk fizikçi ve  matematikçi .  7 Nisan 1921’de İstanbul’da doğdu. Babası askeri doktor Ahmet Reşit Gürsey, annesi ise Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin öncü bilim kadınlarından kimyager Remziye Hisar'dır. Anne-babasının çocuklarının eğitimi üzerine titizlikle eğilmesi ve küçük yaşta İstanbul aydın çevresinin içinde yer almak onun çok yönlü ve sanata düşkün kişiliğininin oluşmasını sağladı.  Feza Gürsey  Galatasaray Lisesi'ndeki eğitimini 1940 yılında tamamladı. 1944 yılında da İstanbul Fen Fakültesi Matematik–Fizik Dalı'ndan mezun oldu. İstanbul Üniversitesi’ndeki fizik asistanlığı sırasında M.E.B. tarafından yapılan sınavı kazanarak İngiltere’de Imperial College’de doktora yapma imkanını elde etti. Kuaterniyonların alan  teorisine  uygulanmaları konusunda yaptığı ve 1950'de tamamladığı çalışması, bilim dünyasında uyandırdığı yankıların yanısıra, onun için de yaşam boyu sürecek bir araştırma ilgisinin odak noktası oldu....

Physicist and mathematician.  (B. April 7th, 1921, Istanbul – D.April 13th, 1992, New Haven / USA). He was born as the first son of the chemist and scientist Prof. Dr. Remziye Hisar (1902-1992), who took her chemistry doctorate from Sorbonne University and Dr. Reşit Süreyya Gürsey (1889-1962), medical doctor and physicist. He started primary school at Paris, Jeanne d’Arc Primary School and there, he won the admiration of her teachers. Beginning from the third grade, he continued to his education life at Galatasaray High School at Istanbul and he also drew the attention of his teachers.  He decided to study physics in high school years.
